Cufflinks — history and significance

Cufflinks first appeared in 17th-century France as boutons de manchettes — two buttons joined by a chain, worn exclusively by the aristocracy at the court of Louis XIV. The Industrial Revolution and the spread of the French (double) cuff transformed them into an essential element of every well-dressed gentleman's wardrobe. They remain one of the very few accepted forms of jewellery in classical menswear — obligatory at white tie, expected at black tie, and at a business suit a mark of the man who attends to every detail. The Tiestore.pl collection includes classic cufflinks in silver and gold, geometric and figurative designs, and silk knots — the invention of Parisian shirtmaker Charvet from 1904.

Shirt pins and boutonnière pins

Shirt and collar pins descend from the Victorian stick pin — a slender needle with a decorative head in pearl, gemstone or gold, used to secure ascots and cravats. In the otherwise sober vocabulary of 19th-century dress, they were one of the few opportunities for personal expression. Boutonnière pins are the durable, reusable equivalent of the fresh flower worn in the left lapel buttonhole — a tradition with military origins, inseparable from the gentleman's wardrobe of the Victorian era. Both accessories are most at home with waistcoated suits, morning dress and black tie.

Tie bars — function and form

The tie bar and tie clip emerged after the First World War, when the waistcoat fell out of daily dress and could no longer keep the blade in place. A tie bar should sit between the third and fourth shirt buttons and measure approximately 70–80% of the tie's width. Metal should always coordinate with the watch case and cufflinks — a detail that separates the studied from the merely dressed.
